When setting up an integrated merchant account, you'll need to have answers to the following: what domain name you'd like, or ideas for domain names, how much space you'll think you'll need to grow in, what products and/or services you'll be selling, and what type of sales you'll expect to be bringing in. You'll also need to provide basic information about yourself and your company. There will be an application to fill out, and quite possibly start-up costs to pay for. The rest will be handled by the provider of the integrated merchant accounts. After all, that's their niche in the merchant account industry: taking care of everything, so that you don't have to.

As a new or existing business owner there may be some confusion about accepting credit cards. It's not a matter of if you should accept credit cards, because it has been proven it will be harder to survive in your business if you do not accept alternative payment methods other than cash.
This is due to most consumers paying for the majority of their purchases today with either a credit card or a debit card. The question is who should be your provider and how much does it cost. Here is a simple rundown on how merchant accounts are billed.

This article is all about the gateway account basics. Think of this is a few things that you'll want to know before getting setup with a new account. This type of account is typically used to facilitate the transactions that take place between the customer inputting their credit card information on some website's shopping cart checkout screen and the merchant bank who processes the credit card transactions.

A gateway is the software that collects the transaction information and submits that information to the merchant bank so that the funds can be paid by the credit card bank of the customer or individual using the credit card to the merchant bank, then a deposit to the bank account of the merchant so that the transaction can be completed. Of course, this can be compared to a regular physical terminal which does the same thing, just through a different method.

One of the features of a gateway company is the ability of the merchant to run transactions manually assuming a phone / fax or even a "live" transaction needs to take place before a product or service can be delivered. The virtual terminal is usually accessed via the login to the gateway and an easy link is there to allow the owner to input the credit card information and the billing information as well to process the transaction.

To increase sales on your website, you must accept credit cards. To process credit cards, you could apply for a merchant account through your bank or other financial institution.

Sometimes, though, you would be further ahead to use the services of a credit card processor. This is especially true when you are first starting out and have more limited resources. In this way, you may process credit card transactions without the high front-end costs and requirements of a merchant account.
